Active Ingredients: Active ingredients are the ingredients contained within skincare products that work to address the skin concern the product is meant to target. For example, zinc oxide is an active ingredient in sunscreens and its specific function is to shield against harmful effects of the sun. 

 

Brand: The name of the brand. A brand is the owner of a set of products that they manufacture. Brands manage and are responsible for all the information directly pertaining to their products.

 

Complex: A complex is a blend of ingredients that when grouped together, perform specific functions. For example, a combination of ginseng, green tea and vitamin B could be a complex formulated to target a specific skin concern. 

 

Component: A component is a way to organize your ingredients within a product. Every product consists of at least one component. 

 

Multi-Component Example: A bundled product with a concealer and a foundation will have two components, concealer will be one component and foundation will be the other. Each component will have specific ingredients associated with it.

 

Single Component Example: a cleanser will have one component to group it’s ingredients. 

 

Definition: The definition of an ingredient, created and managed by ClearForMe. All definitions are created with fact base, independent information explaining what an ingredient is made of, it's functions in layman's terms, and the source.

 

Disclosed Fragrance: A disclosed fragrance simply means the company is letting the consumer know what is behind the word “fragrance”. Brands can use this group to disclose scent ingredients in their product.

 

Product Detail Page URL (aka Handle): This field stores the public location for the page where the details for the product can be found. This can store a full URL (ex: https://haileybeauty.com/products/brightening-toner), a relative URL (ex: "/products/brightening-toner"), or even just the "slug" or "handle" for the product within your shop (ex: "brightening-toner") depending on your particular usage.

 

Inactive Ingredients: A group used to organize ingredient lists of a product. “Inactive” does not mean the ingredients don’t have any effect; rather, it simply means they do not have regulatory status as active ingredients.

 

Ingredient Functions (the job of an ingredient): 

Abrasive: Exfoliant

Absorbent: To take in/soak up another substance

Anticaking: Prevents clumping

Antifungal: Prevent reproduction of fungal cells

Antimicrobial : Preservative, prevents bacteria growth and production

Antioxidant: Prevents free radical damage

Astringent: To tighten and tone the skin

Binding: To bring ingredients together

Buffer Agent: Stabilizes pH environment

Bulking: Increases volume

Chelating Agent: Binds to metal ions to break down trace metals

Colorant: Provides color

Deodorant Agent: Reduces/prevents odor

Emulsion Stabilizer: Prevents separation of ingredients

Film Former: Provides smooth feel to skin

Flavoring Agent: Provides flavor

Fragrance: Provides scent/odor

Hair Colorant: Provides color to hair

Hair Conditioning: Retains moisture for hair

Hair Fixative: Holds hair in place

Humectant: Draws moisture in

Lytic Agent: Non-scrubbing exfoliant

Opacifying Agent: Gives a pearly look

Oral Care Agent: For oral care

Ph Adjusters: Controls ph

Preservatives: Prevents Bacteria

Skin Conditioning: An emollient, helps the skin retain moisture

Skin Protectant: Protects the skin

Slip Modifier: Provides smoothness to skin

Solvent: Dissolves solution

Surfactant: Keep unlike ingredients together, dissolve, cleanse, foam, make soluble

Viscosity Agent: Control thickness (increase or decrease)

 

Ingredient Group (aka Function Group): An ingredient group explains the role of a group of ingredients within a component. Ingredient groups include:

  • Ingredients
  • Inactive Ingredients
  • Active Ingredients
  • Complex
  • Disclosed Fragrance
  • May Contain
  • Proprietary Blend
  • Tool

 

Ingredient Name: The name given by the brand for an ingredient in its product. This typically reflects the ingredient label on the product itself.

 

Ingredients: Default ingredient group for ingredients in a product. Ingredient Groups explain the role of a group of ingredients within a component. Other ingredient groups include: Inactive Ingredients, Active Ingredients, Complex, Disclosed Fragrance, May Contain, Proprietary Blend or Tool. 

 

May Contain: [+/-...] means the product may contain any or all of the ingredients listed. Brands can use this group to list ingredients that may be in the product, such as titanium dioxide, ci 77891, or iron oxides.

 

MSRP (US$): The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) is the price a product's producer recommends it be sold for in retail stores.

 

Product Attribute List: A list of attributes pertaining to the product.

Contains Tree Nuts: Contains Almonds, Brazil nuts, Cashews, Hazelnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and Walnuts.

Fragrance Free: Fragrance-free means that fragrance materials or masking scents are 

not used in the product. No fragrance ingredients (synthetic or natural) are added to the Product.

Gluten- Free: Free of wheat (wheatberries, durum, emmer, semolina, spelt, farina, farro, 

graham, KAMUT® khorasan wheat and einkorn), rye, barley and triticale – a cross between wheat and rye

Packaging- Biomaterials: Made from substances derived from living (or once-living) organisms.

Packaging- Degradable: Product will completely break down and decompose into elements found in nature in a reasonably short period after disposal.

Packaging- Recyclable: Product can be collected, separated, or otherwise recovered from the waste stream through an established recycling program for reuse or use in manufacturing or assembling another item.

Packaging- Recycled Content: Product made of recycled raw material, reconditioned, and re-manufactured components that have been recovered or diverted to the waste stream either during the manufacturing process or after consumer use.

Packaging- Refillable: Product can be refilled through a sale of another product to refill the original package or there is a system in place for the collection and refilling of the package.

Packaging- Renewable: Product made with recycled content, recyclable, and biodegradable materials

Vegan: A product that is vegan does not contain any animal ingredients or 

animal-derived ingredients. 

Cruelty Free: Cruelty-free cosmetics declares product and ingredients have not been 

tested on animals.

 

Ingredient Attribute List: A list of attributes pertaining to the ingredient.

Plant Derived: Derived from a plant source.

Synthetic: Derived Synthetically.

Non-GMO: Not genetically modified.

Non-Nano: Particles with a diameter larger than 100 nanometers are considered non-nano.

Organic: Denotes Organic, Certified Organic, Organically Grown, Ingredients From Organic Farming, USDA Organic, Certified Organic Fragrance. Look at the label for further details.

Proprietary Blend Or Complex: Mix of ingredients that are in a proprietary blend for the brand.

Naturally Derived Fragrance: Fragrance ingredients that have been extracted using solvents (alcohol, petrochemicals, vegetable oils), or extracted by fermentation, or ingredients which may have a natural component but have been significantly processed.

Mineral Derived: Made from mineral, a natural occurring substance.

Wild Harvested: Wild Harvested means plants or portions of plants that are collected or harvested from defined areas of land which are maintained in a natural state and are not cultivated or otherwise managed.

Biodynamic: Biodynamics is a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food, and nutrition.

Constituents Of 100% Essential Oils: Made up of only essential oils - 1 or more. Essential oils are physically extracted from the skin of the fruit through steam or cold pressing (expression). Essential oils have not been chemically altered (via reaction, solvent extraction) from their natural state.

Wild Crafted: Wildcrafting (also known as foraging) is the practice of harvesting plants from their natural, or 'wild' habitat, Primarily for food or medicinal purposes. It applies to uncultivated plants wherever they may be found, And is not necessarily limited to wilderness areas.

Natural Based Preservative: *Natural Vegetable Preservative; Natural Based Preservative.

Essential Oils: Essential oils are physically extracted by steam or expression (cold pressing) of the skin of the fruit. Essential oils have not been chemically altered (via reaction, solvent extraction) from their natural state.

 

Product Name: Name of the product (managed by the brand).

 

Proprietary Blend: A "proprietary blend" is a combination of ingredients used only by one brand. No other brand makes the exact same combination of ingredients.

 

Retailer Note: A note stored on the CFM platform pertaining to that specific ingredient for that specific product. This is retailer managed. Example: A retailer may want to specifically highlight that their policy is to only use ethically sourced royal jelly. This should be considered as a retailer note.

 

Specialty Character: A specialty character is a character that describes an ingredient attribute. For example, the specialty character “*” could be associated with the attribute “organic”.

 

Specialty Text: Contains details such as footnotes that can be displayed at the end of an ingredient widget. May contain HTML formatting.

 

SKU: The Stock Keeping Unit number for a product that is in your brand or retail store’s inventory. A SKU is a unique code consisting of letters and numbers that identify characteristics about each product, such as manufacturer, brand, style, color, and size. 

 

Tool: A tool can be any beauty or cosmetic item that comes with the product in terms of application or successful use. Some examples of a beauty tool may be a makeup brush, an eye roller, or a jade roller. 

 

UPC: Universal Product Code of the product. The UPC consists of 12 numeric digits that are uniquely assigned to each trade item. Every product on ClearForMe must have a UPC assigned to it.
